Insects

These are some of the insects I have met in and around our garden.

Shieldbug 2002/07/10 10:46

This shieldbug was sitting on a raspberry leaf. When I went a bit too close he crawled onto my arm, onto the sleeve of my T-shirt and round to the back of my neck. I had to take the T-shirt off to find him again, but he survived the adventure and I returned him to the raspberries.
A green-veined white butterfly. It was always on the move, but I managed to get this shot.Green-veined white 2002/07/04 15:11

Elephant hawkmoth 2002/07/02 15:32

Not quite in our garden, but in some long grass in the park next door. I found this elephant hawkmoth while looking for orchids.
Orange-tip butterflies are frequent visitors to our garden. They like the cuckooflowers, also known as lady's smock, that grow in our lawn. This is a female, so lacks the orange tips.Female orange-tip 2002/06/03 15:46

Beetle 2002/07/12 13:14

I once saw one of these small beetles with a frog orchid pollinium attached, but I have never seen them pollinate any of the orchids in our garden.
Hoverflies are one of the insects most frequently seen on the spotted orchids. This one was resting for a few minutes on the side of one of our alpine tubs.Hoverfly 2002/07/11 09:20
