Ice vase 2nd January 2004

This second triangular ice vase appeared on 2nd January 2004 in shallow frozen water in a rectangular paint roller tray which we use as a water dish for birds in our garden.

It was 12 mm in height and triangular in cross-section, measuring 67 x 50 x 45 mm.

The triangular shape of both ice vases is reflected in the frequency of triangular patterns in ice, such as in this example.

On this occasion it did not initially appear as a vase but as a triangular raised area in the ice.

After taking these two pictures I wanted to break the ice so that the birds could drink. I kicked in the ice with the heel of my boot. Immediately the ice triangle burst open at the top as if the water was under some pressure inside, and it took on the appearance in the remaining pictures. It now looked more like the previous ice vase, though not so high. As the temperature was below freezing, it remained like this for the rest of the day.
