Hydra
This Hydra turned up in one of Fred's rotifer samples. It had travelled all the way from the south of England. It is related to sea anemones and feeds on small crustaceans which it kills with special stinging cells on its tentacles. Once I saw it devour a worm that was almost as large as the hydra itself. Its body measures about 3 mm, but the tentacles are about another 13 mm. To the bottom left, it has a bud which is developing into another Hydra and will soon break free.
